A PERTHSHIRE adventurer’s back-breaking voyage across the Atlantic got under way last night.
Benno Rawlinson (26), from Abernethy, is part of an eight-man crew seeking to break the world record for rowing across the Atlantic.
Benno and his crewmates have been waiting in Gran Canaria since the start of the year for the right weather window.
They will now make a desperate bid to reach Barbados in under 30 days in their purpose-built craft, the 40-foot Avalon.
Benno said: “We are very excited for the challenge ahead.
“The hard work and determination required will make the journey all the more enjoyable.”
The current record stands at 32 days for the 3,000-mile journey.
During the gruelling month, Benno and three others will row in two-hour shifts, before resting for two hours at a time while the other half of the crew take their turn.
Benno has already raised almost £1,000 for the RNLI through sponsorship.
The record attempt is the same one which Benno’s fellow Perthshire adventurer Mark Beaumont tried early last year with near-disastrous consequences.
A massive wave hit their boat and caused it to overturn.
