A section of a five-star country park was cordoned off by firefighters while experts investigated a potentially radioactive item.
A small container marked as holding radioactive material was found in Chatelherault country park in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, at 1.40pm.
An environmental protection unit was called to the scene and an area of open parkland was cordoned off in preparation for expert analysis.
A scientific advisor and hazardous material (hazmat) officer scanned the five-inch black drum for beta and gamma particles but found no evidence of these.
They will then check for alpha particles.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said: “There is a radioactive incident at Chatelherault Country Park in Hamilton.
“A drum was found which had ‘radioactive material’ written on it. It is a black drum five inches in diameter.
“The fire service sent out an environmental protection unit and an area was cordoned off on open ground.
“After it was cordoned off, no further action was taken until the scientific advisor and hazmat officer arrived.
“They entered the inner cordon and confirmed there were no beta and gamma particles. They are now checking for alpha particles.”
