Litter louts who blight efforts to keep Dundee tidy are being warned they will “pay the price for their selfishness”.
Fines handed out to people who spoil the city’s pavements and parks have rocketed over the past four years as the council seeks to clamp down on the problem.
Figures released by the Scottish Government show 69 fiscal fines were issued to litter louts in Dundee in 2011-12, compared with just one in 2008-09.
The fines, usually £75, are meted out by the procurator fiscal to people who fail to pay fixed penalty notices administered by the council.
Craig Melville, convener of Dundee City Council’s environment committee, said the increase was proof of the local authority’s efforts to stamp out littering.
He said: “These figures show the increasing use of fiscal fines by the procurator fiscal to deal with people who do not pay fixed penalty notices issued by the council.
“We report people who ignore the fines to the fiscal and we will continue to do this.
“The council is determined to keep the city clean.”
The figures were revealed in the Scottish Parliament following a request by South Scotland MSP Chic Brodie.
Fiscal fines handed out for littering in Dundee have been rising dramatically since 2008-09.
