Scotland is in the grip of a Man vs Food phenomenon.
Rascals in St Andrews has its Poppas Revenge, which contains a dizzying 7lb of ground beef the same as 28 quarter-pounders and an almost heart-stopping 7,000 calories.
Now an Edinburgh eaterie is getting in on the act. City Cafe is marketing its Ultimate Burger Challenge.
The towering mountain of meat contains no fewer than seven burgers, including three beef burgers, two chicken fillets, and two spicy beanburgers, covered with a heap of toppings and nestling inside an extra large bun. It comes with coleslaw and a large portion of chips.
The dish costs £30 not cheap for a burger but anyone who finishes it doesn’t have to pay and gets a free champion’s T-shirt and their picture on the cafe’s wall of fame.
Man vs Food is a popular American reality television programme in which food enthusiast Adam Richman attempted to consume all manner of monster meals.
The presenter retired from food challenges a year ago.
Richman refused to elaborate on his reasons for quitting, leading to concerns his health might have been at risk.
Food challenges have been roundly criticised by some quarters, particularly after a report last month suggesting half of all the food produced in the world ends up being thrown out.
After reporting on Rascals’ 7,000-calorie burger challenge, The Courier received letters complaining about the pub’s apparent disregard for food waste.
