Tayside Police has appealed for witnesses after a number of gravestones were pushed over in Forfar.
A total of six headstones have been felled by vandals in the town’s Newmonthill cemetery.
The vandalism took place between January 25 and 29 and was discovered and reported by an Angus Council worker.
A section of the cemetery had been cordoned off during recent bad weather due to subsidence, but the council confirmed this was a separate issue.
A spokeswoman for the council said: “On Tuesday January 29, a member of staff discovered that six headstones had been pulled over at Newmonthill cemetery in Forfar and notified Tayside Police.
“Five headstones were in section ‘O’ at the cemetery and one in section ‘P’ both of these sections contain a mixture of old and newer headstones.
“The headstones were undamaged and council staff have reinstated them into safe, standing positions and will do further work to secure them permanently.
“As there was no damage and the headstones have been put back into their original positions, we have not required to notify the families of the deceased of this incident.
“Anyone who witnessed, or has knowledge of the vandalism should contact Tayside Police.”
The police can be contacted on 0300 111 2222.
