Perth’s “Broomhill Oak” given fresh chance to grow again

An aged oak tree in Perth cut back by a housing developer will have a chance to re-grow.
The “Broomhill Oak” was badly damaged when a builder sawed its limbs off last year.
The tree, which is between 80 and 100 years old, formed part of the original woodland in the Oakbank area.
Local councillor, Willie Wilson, said the tree should never have been so substantially cut back but welcomed a plan to give it a chance of survival.
He said: “Following consultation with the developers, the owner of the tree and the council, it was agreed to remove the remaining limbs and create a tidy stump.
“This is to remain, with a view to ascertaining if the tree will regenerate in this spring’s growing season. It is a far from ideal solution to the matter.
“However, it does give the remainder of the tree a chance to regenerate, which everyone involved would want to succeed.
“The whole sad saga, however, emphasises the need for residents and developers to be conscious of the need to consult fully with the council so that the proper methods are used for trimming trees in the future.”
