Dundee’s only Conservative councillor has proposed saving almost £7,000 by cutting out alcohol at City Chambers.
Derek Scott also wants to get rid of another £7,000 used to provide the 29 councillors with food and refreshments, £1,000 used to send councillors to conferences and almost £26,000 from the hospitality budgets of council departments.
The total saving would be more than £40,000.
His proposals, made ahead of the Thursday’s meeting to decide the council’s revenue budget for 2013-14, also include revamping the system used to allocate £750,000 in community regeneration funding, which at present is shared between six wards.
The policy and resources committee is due to approve grants totalling £103,000, most of which is for a play area in Lochee. Mr Scott wants the remaining two wards Ferry and West End to receive equal allocations.
He said: “My intention in identifying additional savings was to save the Friendly Bus from being axed, but now that the SNP administration has changed its mind about this due to the representations that were made I am offering them up to be used elsewhere.
“Although the savings I have identified are modest in comparison to the overall council spend I think council tax payers in Dundee will be surprised to learn that these items haven’t already been cut.”
