Dundee United striker Johnny Russell believes new manager Jackie McNamara and his backroom staff can help him fulfil his dream of playing for Scotland at senior level.
The 22-year-old has appeared several times for the Under 21s but has yet to win his first cap for the main national side, despite being called up to the squad last May for the friendly against the USA.
But with 17 goals under his belt so far this season including another early strike against Hearts on Saturday Russell hopes his goal-scoring exploits will be enough to grab Gordon Strachan’s attention going into next month’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Serbia.
Russell has been given a boost by the arrival of McNamara and fellow former Scotland internationals Simon Donnelly and Darren Jackson at Tannadice and hinted it has been no coincidence that his form has improved as a result.
“It’s every boy’s dream to play for their country and hopefully that’s still to come from me in the future,” he said. “I’ve still got a lot to learn and to get better before I fall into that standard but hopefully if I keep scoring goals I’ll get a chance.
“Getting into the March squad is not really an aim just now because I’ve still got a lot to learn but I really want to play for Scotland and if I can force myself into the set-up then I’ll be delighted with that.
“I’ve noticed a difference in myself. With the new gaffer and the staff he’s brought with him, there’s been nothing but compliments.
“They just boost your confidence and they give you that lift. They’ve given me belief back in my game and I’m extremely grateful for that.”
