Two lasers worth a total of £130,000 to help patients with disfiguring skin conditions have been donated to the Ninewells Hospital Photobiology Unit in Dundee.
The donation was made by the Disfigurement Guidance Centre Charity in Cupar, which has been operating for more than 30 years.
The charity depends on personal donations and legacies to support continued development in an important area of need.
The number of lasers in the dermatology clinic at Ninewells Hospital now stands at eight, and the latest donations allow more treatments to be offered to patients with disfiguring skin conditions.
The patients experience emotional distress that can cause more pain than their physical condition, and in many cases it is the reaction of others that causes the problem.
With lasers, help can be offered to many patients with birthmarks, benign lesions and hirsutism (excessive hairiness).
The reputation of the laser clinic is growing as staff carry out research which is presented at conferences taking place across the world.
Professor Harry Moseley, who heads up the team, is also honorary president of the British Medical Laser Association.
He said, “We are very grateful to the Disfigurement Guidance Centre Charity for the extraordinary generous gift of not just one but two lasers.
“The growth in our laser clinic has developed considerably over the past 10 years or so, and using profits from the private clinic supports us to continue to advance knowledge, which in turn helps our local patients who are receiving NHS treatment.”
