Bangladeshi workers facing deportation after Angus restaurant raids

The UK Border Agency has released more details about dramatic raids at three Indian restaurants in Angus on Friday evening.

Immigration officers swooped on two eateries named the Bengal in Monifieth and Forfar, as well as The Swan in Kirriemuir.

The nine-hour operation began shortly before 6pm on Friday and involved 60 immigration staff, according to the UKBA.

All 16 men detained by police are Bangladeshi, it has emerged. Three of the men in custody have been arrested in connection with alleged “organised abuse of citizenship routes” while a further 13 could face deportation for working illegally.

A spokeswoman for the UKBA said: “They were all Bangladeshi and all male. The raids started at 5.50pm on three restaurants in Forfar, Kirriemuir and Monifieth and work continued until 3am. “It involved 60 UKBA officers. The immigration offenders are in immigration detention pending removal. The three organisers are in police detention.”

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said the force took their lead from the UKBA.

She said: “It’s being run by UKBA staff. Our officers were there to support them.”
