Dundee Sports Awards winners ‘should be very proud’

Dundee’s top sports stars scooped prizes at the annual Dundee Sports Awards in the Caird Hall last night.

A total of 12 awards were decided by a panel of judges, with a lifetime achievement award going to former hockey player Maureen Golden and Leisure and Culture Sportsperson of the Year to young Forfarshire cricketer Aman Bailwal.

Dundee Sportsman’s Dinner Young Sportsperson of the Year went to Menzieshill water polo player Louise Fox, a member of the GB under-19 squad.

Maureen Golden’s service and achievements over many years with Menzieshill Hockey Club and as co-chairperson of SportDundee were recognised with the presentation of the sportscotland/Active Schools Service to Sport/Lifetime Commitment Award.

Hundreds of athletes, coaches, teams, clubs and volunteers from across the city were represented, while Glasgow Commonwealth Games mascot Clyde featured in the ceremony to highlight athletes working towards the games in2014.

Lord provost Bob Duncan, chairman of Leisure and Culture Dundee, said: “It gives me great pleasure to see so many people involved in local sport gaining deserved recognition for their efforts.

“It is brilliant to see the people from Dundee who contributed so much to the success of London 2012 being recognised for their efforts.

“The Dundee Sports Awards evening is the most prestigious event of its kind in Dundee and all the nominees and winners should be very proud of their achievements.”

The other winners were:

Run 4 It Coach of the Year Charlotte Jones;

GA Engineering Community Coach of the Year Neil Munro;

Dundee City Disability Sport Jenny Wood Allen Award Hannah Craig;

SportDundee Volunteer of the Year Paul Gibson;

NHS Tayside Young Volunteer of the Year Liam McGraw.

Team/Club awards were: University of Abertay Dundee Team of the Year, Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club Ladies 1st team; British Heart Foundation Young Team of the Year, Dundee Senior Schoolboys’ Team; ClubDundee Club of the Year, Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club and Spar Sporting School of the Year (Primary), Clepington PS, Secondary, Grove Academy.
