First division player of the year John Baird will still be a Raith Rovers player next season, manager John McGlynn insists.

The Stark’s Park striker was recognised by his peers at the annual PFA award ceremony on Sunday night, as was McGlynn, who was named his league’s manager of the year.

There will be cost-cutting in Kirkcaldy over the summer, McGlynn has admitted, but the former St Mirren frontman has a year left on a two-year contract and will be staying with Rovers.

McGlynn said, “It’s excellent for John that he’s topped this vote by his fellow professionals. There’s no bigger compliment.

“Players are the best judges of who has performed well over the course of a season and it’s hard to argue with their choice.

“He’s had a really good season, scoring 13 goals, and he’ll be with us next season as we rebuild.”

On his own award, McGlynn said, “I was very down on Saturday night. This doesn’t make up for it we’d both swap them for SPL football but it’s great to get recognition for the players for all the hard work they’ve put in this season.

“For Raith Rovers to get two awards shows that we’ve done a lot right this season. We came up a wee bit short in the end, but we’ve never been out of the top two from day one, and it’s nice that people recognise that.”
