Perthshire-born beauty Katharine Brown is in the running to become this year’s Great Scot.

The former Miss Scotland and Miss UK has been shortlisted for the prestigious award, alongside the likes of Billy Connolly and Duncan Bannatyne.

In recognition of her efforts to encourage the nation’s youngsters to get fit, the 24-year-old from Dunblane was named Sports Ambassador for Scotland last year. And it is because of her dedication to sport that Katharine, a trained tennis coach, has been recognised.

She told The Courier, “I just can’t believe it to be nominated for such an award alongside someone as talented as Billy Connolly is a true honour. It’s especially special because the future of sport and exercise in Scotland means everything to me.

“I want to prove to our young people that getting fit and healthy is fun there are so many activities on offer across the country and I want them to make the most of this.

“I am really excited about the awards event. I know I will get to meet some of Scotland’s most inspirational people.”

The awards dinner takes place at Boisdale of Canary Wharf, London, tonight. The evening will be hosted by the Scottish journalist, editor and television presenter Andrew Neil and Scottish media magnate Lawson Muncaster and will include the finest in Scottish food and drink.

The Great Scot Awards will be presented by past Great Scots, Sir Jackie Stewart and Jack Vettriano.
