Dundee may have failed to end a rollercoaster season with the win they wanted but boss Barry Smith and chief executive Harry McLean joined forces to praise the collective will which has carried the club through a turbulent campaign.
In truth, Queen of the South ran out deserved winners as the Dark Blues finally seemed to run out of steam.
However, Smith said, “The players are mentally and physically tired.
“They have put in a tremendous effort over the last few months and I thank them all for giving everything they have for the club.
“What the boys have achieved this season has been incredible and I think this team will get even better next season,” he said.
The Dundee support at Dumfries numbered more than 1000 and they partied all afternoon, despite a disappointing defeat.
They swirled their scarves in unison in recognition of the players’ efforts at avoiding relegation after the 25-point deduction.
Chief executive McLean also paid tribute to players and supporters who showed commendable resilience when the chips were down.
McLean said, “The fans are the soul of the club and both the fans and the players have been amazing since October.”
The match started badly for Dundee when Allan Johnston fired home after a great run and pass by Colin McMenamin on 18 minutes.
The former Dundee striker McMenamin hurt his old side again seven minutes later when he set up Paul Burns who side-footed home.
Burns bulleted home a header from a Bob Harris cross for the third.
