Motorists are facing more major delays at rush hour today as roadworks on one of the main easterly routes out of the city continue.
Frustrated drivers were stuck in long traffic jams on Tuesday evening as the council kicked off its carriageway surface dressing works on Dundee Road which are due to last up to five days.
As a result the eastbound carriageway will be closed for the duration with traffic diverted up Craigie Drive at the Stannergate roundabout and on to Strathern Road before heading down Ellieslea Road to rejoin Dundee Road.
And with the main A92 Arbroath road open but still not back to normal condition due to recent resurfacing work, motorists heading to the east of the city or beyond to Angus are facing double trouble.
As workers headed home on the first day of the works on Tuesday, tailbacks could be seen snaking back for miles.
Traffic police sent one unit to direct motorists at the Stannergate. Head of road policing in Dundee Inspector Gordon Taylor said, “We were trying to emphasise the diversion in place but there was major congestion and it was difficult.
“We will be monitoring the situation again tonight and we used the media last night to try to get the message across but all roads in the area were difficult for drivers to negotiate.
“The council and the planners didn’t anticipate the volume of traffic and the knock-on that would have on the diversions.”
Dundee City Council today said it had given motorists plenty of warning.
A spokesman said, “The council took steps to ensure drivers knew about the works, highlighting them through various media channels.”Have you been affected by the roadworks? Let us know in the comments below.
