The UK Government has been left in “no doubt” about the strategic importance of closure-threatened RAF Leuchars, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said.
The Mid Scotland and Fife MSP was speaking after a meeting with armed forces minister Nick Harvey in London.
Mr Rennie described the discussion as “constructive”.
“I was able to put the case that Leuchars is a good place for the RAF to be,” he told The Courier.
“As a minister he has got to keep his cards close to his chest, but I left him in no doubt about the importance of Leuchars.”
Mr Rennie worked for Mr Harvey a Lib Dem MP at Westminster during his time as the Dunfermline and West Fife MP and enjoys a good relationship with him.
“He knows that I won’t flannel him and will outline the political considerations,” he said.
The announcement on which base will close Leuchars, Lossiemouth or Marham had been expected earlier this year, but was ruled out due to the Holyrood elections.
A decision has been promised before the summer recess at Westminster on July 19.
