As the clear-up continues in Fife after Monday’s storm, more accounts of lucky escapes have emerged. Among them is the story of a group of school children whose bus was struck by a tree.
Youngsters from Auchmuty High School were on Stob Cross Road in Markinch when a branch crashed into the windscreen of the vehicle.
The bus driver was said to have been shaken by the incident but was back behind the wheel for Moffat & Williamson on Tuesday.
Depute head teacher Ian Thomson said the bus had been taking pupils home from the Glenrothes school to Markinch and Star at the time.
“I’ve spoken to a couple of the children about it and what they’re saying is the driver was a bit shaken but they’re all fine,” he said.
Mr Thomson added that Moffat & Williamson, which sent another bus to pick the children up, had dealt with the situation well.
Meanwhile Fife Constabulary revealed calls had rocketed during the storm.
Inspector David Russell said, “The majority of calls concerned fallen trees blocking roads, where fortunately there were no reports of serious or life-threatening injuries.”
He added that Fife Council worked “tirelessly” to return the roads network to normal.
“The public were vigilant and at the height of the storm the contact centre experienced an increase of call volumes of over 500 to 1758 when compared to the same period last week, when the force received 1252 calls.”
