They came in their thousands to watch, and the much-anticipated simultaneous demolition of the four Alexander Street multis in the Hilltown did not disappoint spectators on Sunday.
Crowds gathered at vantage points in Dundee and beyond and, after a morning of nervous excitement as the area around the blocks was cleared and the full exclusion zone put into operation, the Maxwelltown, Carnegie, Jamaica and Wellington towers were finally reduced to rubble in a matter of seconds around 12.30pm.
The main gathering points for spectators were The Law, waterfront, City Quay, Tay Bridge and the Tay Bridgehead area in Fife.
Close to 3000 people had joined Tayside Police special Facebook page for live updates ahead of the demolition, and many others visited The Courier’s own Facebook page to share their thoughts on the towers’ demise.The Courier had reporters and photographers on the scene throughout the day.
