Overflowing drains flood Leuchars housing complex with sewage

Torrential rain has got right up the nose of a Leuchars pensioner.

Catherine Drysdale awoke on Sunday to discover the drains at her sheltered housing complex had flooded for the second time this year.

Her garden at Mears Court was covered in faeces, toilet paper and other debris.

Mrs Drysdale’s son Craig told The Courier Scottish Water had been very helpful and promised to ensure the problem was fixed.

However, he claimed the same problem had occurred in Mears Court at least 20 times over the last five years, and said a permanent solution must be found.

“It’s a complex of about 15 houses and the first four are affected by this quite a lot,” he said.

“Every time there is heavy rain the drains and sewage pipes fill up and my mum and other residents find faeces floating about at their back doors.

“These drains are choking and although Scottish Water always come out to fix it, it keeps happening.”‘Disgusting’ health hazardHe added, “My mum has been here nearly five years and it was going on before she arrived.

“There were folk out last year and they did everything they could, and it seemed to be fixed, but now it’s happened again and it’s worse than ever. It’s a health hazard and it’s disgusting.”

Mr Drysdale said the sewage was seeping underneath his mother’s house so it could be smelled even from inside.

“This is an old people’s complex, so it really needs to be fixed properly so it doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Mr Drysdale phoned Scottish Water on Sunday to report the problem and was told that because of the high volume of flooding complaints over the weekend no-one would be available to investigate the problem until Monday.

He said, “I explained that wasn’t good enough because it’s an old folks’ complex and the woman I spoke to was really helpful and contacted her head office in Edinburgh.

“They always come out but a solution needs to be found to this to stop it happening again.”
