Flood defences returned to parts of Dundee on Wednesday only weeks after storm waters ripped through city streets, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Bosses at Meadow Mill near the Verdant Works were given no warning last month when an early-morning flash-flood surged through the former jute mill and nearby premises.
To avoid a repeat, sandbags were stacked outside commercial entrances and special floodgates attached to door frames as Tayside and much of Scotland was hit by heavy and persistent rain.
With yet more showers on Thursday, Mary Core, the property manager at DIA Business Properties in the ground floor of Meadow Mill, said the thought of flooding is never far away.
“We have flood barriers in place but the problem is that we cannot put them on fire doors for safety reasons,” she said.
“And that means the water just flows through there. Because we just don’t know when we are going to be flooded it is a constant worry.”
Meadow Mill sits in the bottom of a concrete basin and stands in the path of floodwaters whenever the city’s drains network is overwhelmed.’Sword of Damocles’Business bosses are no strangers to the problem of flooding and have repeatedly requested Dundee City Council and Scottish Water take action to ensure even under a high volume of rainfall the drainage system is able to cope.
However, despite recent events there appears to be no sign of any improvement, according to businessman Terry Walls.
“It feels like I have the Sword of Damocles hanging over me,” said Mr Walls, who is the co-owner of printing and stationery firm TEW.
“Neither the council or Scottish Water have sorted this out. But Scottish Water say the council has to look at the capacity of the gullies.”
He added, “All we want is for this to be sorted out.”
Widespread rainfall resulted in 11 flood alerts, including Dundee and Angus, issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency on Wednesday.
The 24-hour information service Floodline reminded people to remain vigilant against the threat of flooding.
