A deluge has led to the Perth Highland Games being cancelled the fourth time the event has been hit by bad weather since 2004.
The games, which were due to take place on the South Inch on Sunday and have been running since 1977, are a regular feature in Perth’s calendar with Highland dancing, heavyweight contests and a pipe band contest taking place.
Last year, bands and pipers travelled from as far afield as Canada and Australia to take part.
Despite organisers of the Perth Show taking care of the saturated ground following their event last weekend, this week’s downpour has led to the cancellation.
Andrew Rettie, secretary of Perth Highland Games, said he was “very disappointed” but he could not see any alternative.
The rain also led to the cancellation of Tents in the Park 2011, which was scheduled to take place today on the South Inch, and to the closure of some minor roads in rural areas.
Easing rain reduced the threat of floods in Angus and the Mearns.
Although isolated problems were reported after steady rainfall in many parts during the early part of yesterday, the situation improved to allow respite in towns including Arbroath, where the Brothock remained at a high level.
