A Fife nurse has been struck off for misconduct.

Hilary Brown failed to confirm a patient’s identity before carrying out a blood transfusion on October 23, 2008, at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.

She administered an unprescribed blood transfusion to another patient, failed to document it and provided misleading information to colleagues.

She made incorrect entries in both patients’ notes the following day.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council, meeting in Edinburgh, said her actions were misconduct and ordered she be struck off.

The NMC report states: “In giving the blood transfusion to the wrong patient she made a grave mistake.

“Then, the mistake having occurred, her primary concern ought to have been the welfare of the patient who had received inappropriate treatment as well as the patient who was denied her transfusion.

“Instead of the registrant admitting the error and seeking the best outcome for the patients she gave false information to her colleagues, falsified the records of two patients, failed to report and act on a clinical error and denied knowledge of and responsibility for the incident, all in order to try to secure a better outcome for herself.”
