Hundreds of amateur dramatic enthusiasts are waiting in the wings to help save the Whitehall Theatre.
A Facebook group (link) was set up after The Courier told how the venue’s operating company had plunged into liquidation and the building’s owners the Whitehall Theatre Trust were desperately trying to find a way to keep the venue alive.
Within 48 hours, almost 750 people had signed up to pledge support and put forward fundraising suggestions.
Downfield Musical Society member Andrew Wilson was among the first to post online and has been using Twitter to contact celebrities to gather support.
He tweeted Stephen Fry and says he received a private message back from the raconteur to say he was sorry to hear of the difficulties.
Andrew (40) said: “We know there are a lot of people out there who don’t want the Whitehall to close and want to support it.
“We were actually quite surprised by the support as within a few hours there were over 500 users on the site.”
Dundee-born actor Brian Cox has also spoken of his sadness at the news (link).
Dundee Theatre Trust chairman Derek Shaw said support had been “phenomenal,” with an open public meeting to be held at the theatre in coming days.
