Tributes have been paid to a Dundee father of two who died after collapsing while working in a chemical tank.
Stevie Conway (33), who lived with his partner Angela Garthley and children Jordan (10) and Keri (4), collapsed while working in a tank at the Diamond Wheels Technologies site in Baird Avenue on Thursday.
His best friend Jimmy Fleming was alerted to the accident within minutes and rushed there to see if he could help.
He arrived to find the garage cordoned off with police tape and it became immediately clear that nothing could be done to save his friend.
He said: “I found out what had happened straight away and I went down but it was already cordoned off. Me, Stevie and Tony Quinn were all like brothers.”
Stevie was born and raised in Dundee and went to Lawside Academy.
He was a fan of Dundee FC and turned out as a goalkeeper for local side Bank Street Athletic.
Club secretary Dave MacDonald said: “We are all gutted. He was such a nice guy a totally genuine boy. He was totally laid back and was a fun guy.”
A spokesman for Diamond Wheels said: “Everyone at Diamond Wheels Technologies is devastated by this tragedy. We have lost a close friend and colleague and our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.
“We have been told to keep an open mind and we hope the investigation will provide a full explanation of how this tragedy happened. We are giving the inquiry our full cooperation and support.”
Two inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive visited the garage and were due to interview Mr Conway’s colleagues as part of a joint investigation into the tragic episode with Tayside Police.
Detective Chief Inspector Shaun McKillop said: “We are looking at all aspects surrounding the incident, then will submit a report, as normal, to the procurator fiscal.”
Kenneth Soper of the nearby Little People Nursery said there had been no danger to children on the premises, despite being advised by police to close all windows while the incident was ongoing.
