Forfar hostelries joined the Angus Pubwatch scheme this week.
Alongside Arbroath and Montrose, the town has joined an initiative designed to enhance the safety of the night-time economy for customers and staff.
The scheme is being rolled out in other towns throughout Angus.
Forfar Pubwatch has got off to an excellent start with 14 licensed premises signing up. It is hoped others will come on board.
It is operated by local licensed premises and, in simple terms, allows staff at premises in the town to communicate with each other to deter violence and anti-social behaviour.
It also provides licensed premises with a direct link to the police, where they can discuss people who are causing problems in pubs, bars and clubs.
Pubwatch premises are easily identified by posters displayed at their entrances. Supporters say the benefit of close co-operation is that those who are identified as being involved in violent, disruptive criminal or anti-social behaviour will be banned from all Pubwatch premises, reducing the threat or fear to the majority who simply want to enjoy their night out.
Chief Inspector Sandra Richard said: “Alcohol is a contributory factor in many of the incidents police have to deal with, particularly at the weekend. As such, Tayside Police fully supports any initiative that aims to reduce criminal activity.
“We are encouraged to see such a large number of licensed premises within the town taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of both their patrons and staff.
“The launch of Pubwatch in Forfar emphasises alcohol-fuelled violence and disorder will not be tolerated in the town and working together in this way will ensure everybody will have a safe and enjoyable night out.”
Angus licensing board convener Councillor John Whyte was pleased at the addition of the town to the scheme.
“I welcome this Pubwatch initiative, supporting and underpinning responsible drinking locally and in its stated aim of ensuring Forfar is a safe night out.”
Towns across Tayside and Fife are part of the Pubwatch programme. Arbroath launched its group earlier this year.
Last week saw Focus on Alcohol Angus partnership launch a small grants scheme to encourage individuals and groups to put forward ideas to tackle problems associated with the misuse of alcohol.
Money will be made available to develop and run approved projects throughout the county.
