Dundee babies have been able to watch 15-rated movies at Dundee Contemporary Arts in breach of the centre’s licence, the city’s licensing committee heard.
DCA’s Bring A Baby screenings, where the young ones have been accompanied by a parent, have proved popular but the centre has only recently learned that it should not have been happening.
DCA director Clive Gillman said the practice has been going on for a few years and the assumption had been that the film certificate was related to the parent and it was acceptable for babies to be in the theatre, even for films with a 15 certificate.
However, he said that, following a recent internal review of the programme, the centre discovered there was no basis for their assumption and it was a breach of their licence.
Mr Gillman sought to put Bring A Baby on a legitimate footing on Thursday when he applied to the committee for permission to present 15-rated films to parents with babies up to a year old.
Councillor Tom Ferguson suggested it would be a good idea for DCA to engage in some outreach work to attract parents in “Lochee and Whitfield” along to the screenings.
The licensing committee unanimously agreed to allow babies up to 12 months to the screenings.
