Armed officers were involved in a 45-minute stand-off in a Forfar house on Monday.
Several occupants of the house were guided to a “safe haven” within the property on Taranty Road, isolating a male occupant within the building. After negotiations he was arrested and remanded in custody.
Police were called to the house, along with a dog unit and officers with riot shields, in response to a serious domestic disturbance.
At the height of the incident there were nine police cars, a police van, an ambulance and an ambulance car in attendance.
Police told neighbours to lock their doors and remain inside for the duration of the incident.
Children making their way home from school were held back and they gathered in groups at the police incident tape.
Officers outside the front of the house could be seen peering in windows, while others disappeared up a close.
Eventually, a 52-year-old man was brought out of the house and put in to a police van.
Tayside Police were called to Taranty Road at 3.50pm.
Inspector Grant Edward, commander on the ground, said officers responded to a report of a domestic incident with a man in the house causing concern for a woman inside.
He said: “As a result we mounted a full scale operation. We deployed the tactical firearms unit, our dogs unit, road policing and the beat section to deal with a serious domestic disturbance.”
Inspector Edward said the priority was to ensure the safety of all those involved. He said that soon after arrival officers “engaged in dialogue” with the man.
Mr Edwards said: “They found a safe haven within the house and segregated the other residents away from the male.”
Asked what instructions were given to neighbouring residents while the armed officers were being deployed, Inspector Edwards said: “They were told to stay inside their property and lock the doors.
“Officers deployed at the house engaged in early dialogue with the male and he has given himself up.”
The man was arrested and escorted from the house shortly before 5pm. The other occupants remained inside the house.
A sole police officer remained outside the house during the evening.
