Author Carmen Reid went back to school when she opened a library in the Mearns this week.
Carmen grew up on a farm near Marykirk and attended Lathallan School in Johnshaven from 1978-1982.
The writer published her first book in 2002, following a career in journalism.
A number of novels followed, including the St Jude’s series, set in a Scottish boarding school not dissimilar to Lathallan.
Prior to Thursday’s opening ceremony, Carmen spoke to pupils and teachers about her memories of the building, in addition to offering youngsters careers advice.
She said: ”I haven’t been back since 1982, so it was great to visit the place. I had my family with me and my dad who was there in the 1950s, so it was nice for him to be able to reminisce.
”My daughter is nine, which is the age I was when I came to the school, and I couldn’t help but notice how big it was compared to her.
”All of the pupils I spoke to were lovely and the English teachers asked how to get more people reading.”
Headmaster Richard Toley said the library had been created in the existing building, which is contained within Brotherton Castle.
He added: ”We are delighted to welcome Carmen and her family back to Lathallan.”
Set in a rural location on the east coast, Lathallan is an ”all-through” school, taking children from nursery age to sixth year.
