Former Dundee art teacher George Mottashaw has died aged 83.
Mr Mottashaw, who taught at Stobwell Secondary and Harris Academy, had strong links with the musical communities of Dundee and north-east Fife, having been a church organist for 50 years and a long-standing official of Dundee Choral Union.
Born in Dundee, he was educated at Clepington Public Primary School and Dundee High School, where he excelled at sports.
His name was on the Loveridge Cup for athletics three years in a row and he was also the record holder for the 440-yard sprint. He also played rugby for the school.
His organ-playing career began in 1941. During his national service he was stationed at Peterborough. Over the years he has been organist at several Dundee churches.
He was a life member of Tayside Organists’ Society, having been president, secretary and treasurer, and was also founder and conductor of the Dundee Lyric Singers, which included his wife, Catherine.
Under his baton, they performed the Messiah 20 times and he was proud to have given many works their Scottish premiere.
Their daughter Susan is also a gifted musician, singing and playing piano and viola.
As church elder, he represented Newport Church at St Andrews Presbytery and attended the General Assembly, where he was given the honour of serving communion on three occasions.
Mr Mottashaw also designed heraldic badges for three schools Hillside Primary, Stobswell Boys and Stobswell Secondary.
Mr Mottashaw is survived by his wife and daughter, brother Douglas, two grandsons, Ross and Scott, and great-grandson Ali.
