A woman lost her leg after being caught in a horrific explosion at a Sikh temple in Dundee.

Another woman was also maimed in the blast, which took place in the kitchen of the Sri Guru Nank Gurwara on Nelson Street at around 9.10am.

The pair, who were not named but are aged 50 and 32, were taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital suffering from lacerations to their legs.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Joginder Singh, the priest at the Sikh Temple, told The Courier that the explosion originated from a gas cooker.

He continued: “All the food is prepared in the kitchen ahead of our service and that is what the women were doing when the explosion happened.

“I know that one woman was in a very bad condition and she has now lost her leg. The other is in a less serious condition but I believe she is still in hospital.”

Emergency services were called to the drama including an NHS Trauma Unit.

Paramedics treated the females, who work as volunteers in the temple, at the scene before rushing them to hospital.

A Tayside Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “We attended a small cooking explosion at the Sikh temple on Nelson Street, which resulted in injuries and some people being taken to hospital.

“We assisted by ensuring the area was safe and helped paramedics with the casualties.”

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, noticed the commotion from his flat on Victoria Road but was unaware an explosion had happened.

“There were fire engines, lots of police cars and ambulances parked up and down the road,” he said. “I also saw guys from a gas company who went into the building later on.

“I didn’t know what was going on but it was obvious something serious had happened.”

The cause of the explosion is being investigated although, Tayside Police say, initial enquiries appear to indicate it was caused by cooking equipment.

Scenes of crime officers remained at the temple for much of Sunday as part of the investigation.

A spokesman said they could inform the Health and Safety Executive of the incident depending on their findings.

“We will be working closely with Dundee City Council,” he said.”Our involvement is more from a safety point of view to help prevent similar incidents from happening.”

Police have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them on 0300 111 2222 or speak with any officer.
