A Dundee couple thought to hold the record for the longest marriage in Scotland have celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary in a Monifieth nursing home.
David and Elizabeth (Betty) Davidson were surrounded by their family on Wednesday as they enjoyed cake and drinks in the garden room at South Grange Care Home, where Mr Davidson has been a resident for the past three years.
Although she turns 99 in October, Mrs Davidson still lives at the couple’s home in Nesbitt Street.
Mr Davidson (95) was born in Dundee and attended Harris Academy before working at Smith Hood & Company, the coal distributor, where he became managing director.
He met Mrs Davidson at the Castle Street congregational church where they were both active members. They married in 1934.
David left the company to serve as a captain in the RAF for six years during the second world war, seeing action in north Africa, and returning to work at the end of the war.
Born Betty Allan, Mrs Davidson took on a part-time job at a glove shop in High Street while her husband was at war.
After that she returned to life as a housewife, bringing up the couple’s two children Gloria and David John.
David John was unable to join his parents’ celebration as he was abroad but Gloria was at the party with two of her cousins.
Both Mr and Mrs Davidson are in good health, and until recently held positions at Dundee Congregational Church.
They have four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
