Dundee may have to content themselves with receiving a five-figure cash windfall on Kevin McDonald.
The Dark Blues are due a 10% cut of any future transfer fee for McDonald who has been linked with a move from Burnley to Bolton, managed by his former Turf Moor boss Owen Coyle.
And with the Dens Park budget having been slashed the sort of six-figure sum involved would be extremely welcome.
But Coyle has made no move — official or unofficial — for the player, giving rise to concern that the anticipated big-money move back into the Premiership may not materialise.
Burnley will have to make some sort of decision regarding McDonald’s future as he is entering the final year of his contract.
And if, despite the player having fallen out with manager Brian Laws, they do look to extend it that will at least be a crumb of comfort for Dundee.
McDonald is eight games short of making 40 appearances for Burnley — a milestone that triggers a further £25,000 payment to the Dark Blues.
If he gets to 60 another £25,000 will be due the Dens Park outfit.
