Drivers fall foul at start of Tayside Police festive season campaign

Two vehicles were seized and 40 drivers were given fixed penalty notices in the first 24 hours of the Tayside Police crackdown on festive season driving offences.

The haul included motorists using mobile phones while at the wheel, failing to wear seatbelts and speeding all made worse by the fact the area has been affected by wind and icy roads in recent days.

One alleged boy racer had his car seized for ”anti-social driving” while a second vehicle was put off the road by officers who believed the driver had no licence or insurance.

A force spokeswoman said: ”A total of 15 drivers were found not wearing their seatbelts, 17 drivers were caught speeding in those conditions too and eight drivers were caught using their mobile phones whilst driving.”

The spokeswoman warned: ”There has been an extension to the vehicle forfeiture scheme so first-time offenders with three times the limit or those who refuse to provide a sample for analysis as well as repeat offenders can have their vehicles forfeited by the court.

”Just over one in seven deaths on Scotland’s roads involve drivers over the legal limit.”

Last year 7,563 people in Scotland were caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, an average of around 20 offenders every day.
