Rail staff and passengers are to see increased high-profile British Transport Police patrols on trains and at stations to help make sure that festive revellers get to their celebrations and home again safely.

BTP officers are joining forces with their rail industry colleagues to urge those using trains and stations over the festive period to enjoy themselves, but also to make sure they stay safe.

Inspector Angela McGregor from the Scotland area of BTP said: ”We want everyone to have an enjoyable time over Christmas and will be working with all our partners to make sure everyone can get to their office party or other event and home again safely and, equally as importantly, without hindrance from others.”

BTP’s Operation Safe Journey aims to combat antisocial behaviour and ensure that rail staff are not subjected to any kind of assault.

Ms McGregor added: ”Traditionally we see an increase of people using trains and stations at this time of year. Please enjoy yourself, but it is important that you remember to behave appropriately.

”There are many people who may not use the rail network as a mode of transport other than at this time of the year.

”So make sure you have your travel arrangements in place and particularly know the time of your last train home. Also, look out for your friends and colleagues during the evening.

”There are also those who may overindulge and drink a bit too much. We don’t want to spoil your fun, but please be responsible and remember that rail staff are there to help you, not to be abused in any way.

”It would be also be remiss not to remind people that the cold weather brings its own challenges and you should ensure you are prepared for the conditions and dress appropriately.”

BTP’s tips to ensure a safe and happy festive season are: plan your journey and know your train times; look after your belongings; look after your friends and colleagues; treat rail staff and fellow passengers with respect; enjoy yourself and stay safe.
