A house in Buckhaven where a father murdered his two children is being razed to the ground this week.
Work got under way at Muiredge Cottage on Monday after Fife Council contributed £10,000 towards the demolition cost.
It has been boarded up for more than three years since the bodies of 25-year-old Michelle Thomson, who suffered from learning difficulties, and her seven-year-old brother Ryan, were discovered in their bedrooms on May 3, 2008.
Their father Robert Thomson had stabbed them 26 times in separate attacks before trying to kill himself.
His estranged wife and mother of the children, June, walked into the harrowing scene when she returned home.
Mr Thomson was later jailed for life and is unlikely to ever be released.
The house was repossessed by the Royal Bank of Scotland because of mortgage arrears and, following a campaign to have it demolished, was bought by the council.
In September, councillors on Levenmouth area committee agreed to fund the demolition.
Earlier this year the local authority said it hoped destroying the house would remove a blight on the area and added that the site would be landscaped.
Councillor David Alexander, who chairs the area committee, said: “It’s the first house you pass as you come into Buckhaven and everybody knows what happened there.
“The community wanted it to be demolished. We would have preferred for this to have happened sooner.”
