Tributes have been paid to a west Fife student who died in a train tragedy on New Year’s Day.

Calum Burt (20), who was studying natural sciences at Cambridge University, is believed to have been struck by a freight train on the line which hugs the coast in his home village of Culross.

British Transport Police are investigating but said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

A spokesman confirmed a young man had died after being hit by a train which was travelling between Inverkeithing and Mossend. The incident was reported by a train driver at 10.23am. It is not known if this was the train which was involved in the collision.

The line carries only freight and is used to transport coal to Longannet power station which lies along the coast at Kincardine on Forth.

Richard Partington, a senior tutor at Churchill College, where Calum was studying, spoke of everyone’s shock and devastation.

”Calum was a wonderful person happy, full of life, focused and immensely talented, with a great future ahead of him.”

He said the college would be memorialising the student.

Calum, a former pupil of Dollar Academy, performed exceptionally well at school before moving on to Cambridge. In his final year at Dollar, he won prizes for maths and physics.

He was also a talented musician and played the violin.
