‘I was almost hoarse’ Lorraine Kelly remembers Dundee United’s UEFA Cup adventure 25 years on

A quarter century after Dundee United appeared in a UEFA Cup final, Lorraine Kelly has relived the day her journalistic impartiality was thrown out of the window.
Lorraine, whose love affair with United was born after meeting now husband Steve in 1985, was a TV-am Scotland reporter billeted to Germany for the second leg of the semi-final against Borussia Monchengladbach.
She recalled: ”The atmosphere was brilliant, I was speaking to the fans beforehand and, as for the game itself, well my reporting wasn’t exactly objective.
”I was just like a fan doing the live feed, shouting my head off from start to finish and I was almost hoarse by the time I had to do my sign-off piece.
”But you get a bit of leeway with stuff like that on breakfast TV I just don’t think it would be acceptable on Sportsound.”
For more of Lorraine’s recollections of United’s historic European adventure, which culminated in heroic defeat to Gothenburg, see Tuesday’s four-page 25th anniversary supplement in The Courier.
