Former Dundee and Dundee United defender Lee Wilkie has become the new assistant manager at Montrose.
The 32-year-old, who was forced to end his playing career in 2010 after an unsuccessful battle with persistent knee problems, has given up his job as a football agent to accept the post with the Angus side.
The former centre-half, who also won 11 Scotland caps, becomes Stuart Garden’s right-hand man and the manager could not hide his joy at landing someone with such a high standing in the game.
He said: ”I am absolutely delighted to have someone of Lee’s calibre on board. He has played at the highest level in the game and with all his knowledge and experience I feel he is a great capture for the club.
”We didn’t do well defensively last season and I’m sure Lee will help us tighten up at the back. He has given up his job as an agent which shows how determined he is to being successful in coaching and management. It also shows his commitment to Montrose.
”Lee is ambitious, as am I, and we are determined to do as well as possible for the club.
”He has done some of his coaching badges already and he is booked on to SFA courses and of course, he has a wealth of contacts from his time as a player as well as an agent.
”He has also been watching a lot of games he was at Montrose alone five or six times last season.
”Lee will also command instant respect having played international football. I’m sure he would have picked up even more caps than he did if it hadn’t been for injury.”
