They are already used to operating under the cover of darkness but metal thieves in Dundee have caused alarm after stealing lampposts from an industrial estate.
Two street lights have been cut down and removed from Jack Martin Way.
Although the road, at the Claverhouse Industrial Park, is not open to traffic, the route is popular with dog walkers from Fintry and the surrounding areas.
Charles Smith (66) admitted he was shocked by his discovery of the missing street lights and immediately reported the theft to the police.
He said: ”I live in Fintry and I walk over that way with my dogs. The road has been closed for years.
”It has been vandalised over time with cable being taken from the lampposts and manhole covers.
”I was walking along and I saw that someone had come round and cut down one of the aluminium lampposts. I couldn’t believe it. They had obviously used professional equipment.”
A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: “When the theft was discovered it was reported to Tayside Police, who are investigating.”
A police spokeswoman said: “Tayside Police are aware of the matter and if anyone has any information, please contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.”
