Dundee’s plans for a new railway station are picking up steam with the lodging of a planning application for the £14 million project.
The city council is the applicant for a development comprising a railway station, concourse, retails units cafe/restaurant and hotel at the ScotRail site on Riverside Drive.
The project was announced in April, with architects Nicoll Russell Studios producing a crescent-shaped design to provide a gateway for rail passengers.
It received a largely favourable public reaction, with most people welcoming the scheme to replace what is commonly regarded as an eyesore of a station.
The new station would rise to five storeys over a central archway.
Passenger facilities, a cafe/restaurant and shops would be on the lower floors and a mid-market hotel in the upper floors.
Dundee administration leader Ken Guild has said more than one hotel chain is interested in moving in. No details of these hotels have been revealed, but they are understood not to include Hilton, which is facing a compulsory purchase order to quit the site of its nearby hotel.
Much of the funding for the new station project has been identified, but a £2.2 million contribution from station owners Network Rail is being sought.
