A woman has died in a car crash on the A90 north of Finavon in Angus.
The woman, in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene of a single vehicle crash on the A90 between Forfar and Brechin that also left a young girl seriously injured.
The victim was a front seat passenger in the maroon Ford Fiesta that veered off the southbound carriageway opposite the entrance to Noranbank Farm, near Finavon, around 3.40pm on Wednesday.
It is understood the vehicle’s four occupants were a family from the north-east.
The male driver escaped serious injury and two rear seat passengers girls aged three and 10 were also freed from the vehicle by emergency crews who rushed to the scene.
The injured were taken in two ambulances to Ninewells Hospital and were met en route by a specialist trauma team.
The youngest child is believed to have suffered a serious head injury in the crash, which saw the car come to rest in the dual carriageway’s offside lane.
A Tayside Fire and Rescue crew from Forfar, which attended the incident, was involved in the operation to remove the deceased woman from the car.
The collision resulted in the closure of the southbound A90 and major tailbacks in both directions.
Inspector Gordon Taylor, of Tayside Police, appealed to anyone who may have seen the car before the accident to come forward.
“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed this southbound Ford Fiesta between Brechin and the scene of the crash, or perhaps even further north, to contact us.
“They may have information of value to our investigation so we would like to hear from them,” he added.
“With assistance of BEAR Scotland, information was put on signs on the A90 to warn traffic of the incident and divert it southbound. The A90 was also closed at St Ann’s and vehicles re-routed to Brechin.”
The stretch remained closed for several hours while crash investigators completed their probe into the accident.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the Fiesta prior to the crash, is asked to contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222, or speak to any officer.
The tragedy came as tributes were paid to Philip McDougall (19), of Arbroath, who was at the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf that crashed on the outskirts of the town almost exactly 24 hours earlier.
