Dundee motorists are facing more than a week of frustration with the closure of a major route into Broughty Ferry for resurfacing.

A section of Dundee Road between Ellislea Road and Bayfield Road will be closed for 10 days from Monday, July 12, to allow contractors to carry out repair works.

The closure will affect the journeys of thousands of drivers and will place increased pressure on Claypotts Road, Strathern Road, Craigie Place, Craigie Drive and Arbroath Road, as well as a number of other smaller side streets.

Householders have been told they will only be able to access their properties from the Dundee side of the works as the junctions with Douglas Terrace, Bayfield Road, Victoria Road, Grove Road, Balmyle Road and Ellislea Road will be closed.

Ferry ward councillor Derek Scott said, “Dundee Road is a main arterial route to Broughty Ferry and South Angus and the carriageway works should ultimately provide a better and safer surface.”

In a letter to residents, Dundee City Council’s senior road maintenance engineer Ronnie Mackenzie acknowledged the work would cause a “degree of inconvenience,” but said the repairs were necessary.

He said, “In the interest of public safety, a road closure will be implemented and through traffic will be diverted via Craigie Place, Craigie Drive, Strathern Road, Claypotts Road and reverse for the duration of the works.

“Junctions with all streets that lead off this section of road will also be closed for the duration of the works.

“Vehicular access, from the west end only, will be maintained where possible for residents although we ask for vehicular traffic movements to be kept to a minimum and (advise) some minor delays may be experienced.

“No on-street parking will be allowed on the section of carriageway being worked on.

“Please note that pedestrian thoroughfare will be maintained throughout the works.

“Please accept my apologies for any disruption these works may cause.

“I am sure that you will understand that major road maintenance work is unavoidable and necessitates a degree of inconvenience to road users.”
