‘Minor hitches’ delay opening of new Montrose Swimming Pool

The opening of the new £9 million Montrose Swimming Pool has been delayed until the middle of next month.

Worked started on the new facility, which includes a sports centre, last March and was scheduled to be completed by the end of this month.

Neighbourhood services committee convener Donald Morrison said the opening had been delayed due to a ”couple of last-minute minor hitches”.

The official public opening will now take place on the weekend of November 17.

In the week prior to the opening, all existing Montrose leisure facilities will be closed to enable staff training.

The combined swimming pool and sports complex on Marine Avenue cost £8.9m, with £1m coming from sportscotland. Ogilvie Construction carried out the bulk of the work.

Joined to the existing Montrose Sports Centre, the new swimming pool will have a main six-lane pool, a viewing gallery and a studio pool with moving floor. The sports and swimming venue will also have a health suite with sauna, steam room and a relaxation area, a fitness suite and multi-purpose rooms for meetings and training.

Montrose residents who have used the facilities during the construction work will be rewarded with a month’s free membership through a new loyalty scheme.

The free membership could cost the council £27,540. It is hoped this sum will be met by increased membership.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10.30am on Saturday November 17. Clubs will be holding sessions open to new members throughout the weekend.

Prior to the official opening, selected audiences will be given a tour of the facilities.

Montrose councillor David May said: ”I recently had the opportunity to visit the new sports centre. It’s a real legacy to leave our youngsters for the future.

”I was very impressed with the quality of the work that was going on and the excellent range of facilities.

”Every care has been taken to cater for both able bodied as well as disabled athletes. What has been designed and built into the new hub is absolutely first class.”
