Dundee City Council’s commitment to green transport is to move up a gear with a plan to increase its pool of eight electric cars by 16 another vehicles.
Staff from different council departments use the fleet for business journeys, and the £162,000 investment in new electric cars would expand those opportunities.
A total of 14 charging points, some of which would be available to the public, could be installed with £160,000 from Transport Scotland for this purpose.
The proposal will be discussed by the environment committee next week.
Convener Craig Melville said: ”We are pleased with the efficiency of the electric cars that are already being used.
”This proposal will help us to build on that experience and to provide an expanded clean and green car fleet for the council.
”We are also looking to build an infrastructure for these vehicles that will have a benefit for the public.
”This will make us well placed for future increases in the use of electric cars.
”These plans will also save the council money in the long term and cut our carbon emissions, so it is a win-win scenario.”
Transport Scotland is providing funds for a rapid charger in the city centre underground car park and eight fast chargers at other council locations.
The council ultimately wants every central car park to have recharging bays and to encourage motorists to switch to electric-powered vehicles.
