Dundee insurance broker Harry Small has died after a short illness. He was 80.
Born in the city, Mr Small was educated at Rockwell Primary and Morgan Academy before joining James Logie & Co as a junior clerk in 1947.
Eleven years later he was made a partner in the business and eventually retired after 44 years with the company in 1991.
Apart from two years of national service in the RAF between 1949 and 1951 he spent his entire career with the firm.
Mr Small’s daughter Brenda, who was Lord Provost John Letford’s daughter-in-law, died of breast cancer in 2005 and his son Richard passed away suddenly after contracting a virus in 1991.
A founding member of the Broughty Ferry and District Round Table, Mr Small served as chairman through 1969-70 and also held the role of honorary treasurer at Abertay Rotary Club for four and a half years.
He also served as chairman of the Dundee Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children for seven years and was an elder of Balgay Parish Church.
A keen sportsman, Mr Small was a member of St Andrews, Blairgowrie and Monifieth’s Grange and Dundee golf clubs.
He also turned out for Morgan Academy FP and Craigielea tennis clubs and played football for Butterburn Boys Club, where he was part of a Scottish Cup winning side, Carnoustie Panmure and YM Anchorage.
Mr Small is survived by wife May, sons Ray and Andrew and grandchildren.
