George Smith, who was director of housing in Dundee between 1973 and 1986, has died at the age of 88.
A native of Perth, Mr Smith was educated at Craigie School and Perth Academy.
He began his 47-year career in housing with the former Perth Town Council in 1939, where he stayed until 1955 his service broken only by four years in the Royal Navy during the Second World War.
Mr Smith moved to posts in Gourock, Dumfries, Cumbernauld and Liverpool before returning to Dundee District Council as housing director in 1973. He retired from the council in 1986.
In recognition of his services to housing, he was awarded the MBE in 1976 and he was president of the Chartered Institute of Housing in 1984-85, as well as being a visiting professor of housing administration at Stirling University.
Mr Smith was a member of Barry Golf Club and the former Lindertis Curling Club.
He is survived by his wife Ella, son Craig, daughter-in-law Ann, and four grandchildren.
