A man who chased his victim before stabbing him was remanded in custody after being found guilty by a jury at Dundee Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Jonathon Stewart Barlow (30), of Saggar Street, had denied that on April 29 in Colinton Place, he assaulted Stewart George Allan, c/o Tayside Police, ran after him, knocked him to the ground, repeatedly punched him on the head and body and repeatedly struck him on the body with a knife or similar instrument.
The two-day trial ended when the jury unanimously found him guilty of the charge.
Advocate James Laverty told the court his client knew custody was inevitable and there was no alternative due to the nature of the charge and his previous convictions, one of which had resulted in a 12-month jail sentence in 2006.
Sheriff Davidson told Barlow the offence was very serious. He said he wanted a report on how much of a danger to the public he represents. This will affect any conditions on his release from sentence.
The sheriff also asked the Crown to investigate whether a pilot scheme for witness impact statements, which could be taken into consideration by sheriffs when sentencing, was extended to take in Dundee’s court.
Sentence was deferred until September 21 and Barlow remanded in custody.
