A jealous boyfriend hid from police on a roof after assaulting his girlfriend’s former partner, a court has heard.
Douglas Wilson (26), a prisoner at Perth, was jailed at Arbroath Sheriff Court after admitting assaulting the man on September 15, after entering uninvited through an open window at his home at Burnside, Letham.
He further admitted placing his arm around the man’s neck restricting his breathing and punching him on the head to his injury, all while on bail.
The court heard Wilson had become irked by the fact his girlfriend continued to be on good terms with her ex-boyfriend after they split up.
Depute fiscal Arlene Shaw said Wilson and his partner had been out drinking in a number of pubs prior to the incident.
She added: ”They finished up in a bar in Letham where the complainer’s step-father was present.”
Wilson’s girlfriend then began discussing the whereabouts of her ex-boyfriend with his father in the pub.
Ms Shaw added: ”The accused seemed to become agitated during this discussion and began making remarks, though it is unclear who they were specified at.
”At this point the accused told his partner that he was going to the complainer’s house.”
The victim was at home alone when he heard a noise as if somebody had put something through the letter box and the security light was activated.
He returned to find his kitchen window was open and Wilson standing in his house.
Ms Shaw said: ”The accused approached him and grabbed him round the neck telling him: ‘I’m going to kill you’. The complainer struggled to breathe and stated that he didn’t want to die.”
A struggle ensued after which Wilson walked out of the house. A short time later his girlfriend arrived and became upset, telling the complainer she didn’t know what was going on and apologising for her new boyfriend’s actions.
Wilson then came back into the living room and told her he had been listening to what she was saying, before attacking the man a second time. He began punching him in the face repeatedly, while the woman attempted to pull him away.
The matter was reported to the police who later attended at the woman’s address. She told officers that Wilson wasn’t there however, he was found hiding on the roof.
The victim sustained bruising and swelling to both eyes, broken and chipped teeth, bruising to the back of his head and other minor bruises to his face.
Defence agent Billy Rennie said his client was aware he would be facing a jail term.
Sheriff Derek Pyle sentenced Wilson to 14 months.
