An Angus sex offender has been remanded in custody after appearing on a sexual assault charge.
Graham Martin (26), from Forfar, denied assaulting a woman on March 17 and had trial set for April 24.
Forfar Sheriff Court heard on Monday that Martin had been released from prison in early February and remains technically subject to the unexpired portion of the three-month sentence. The accused’s agent said his client was fully aware of his lengthy previous record, which includes a number of offences of an analogous nature.
He said Martin was working with agencies to address long-standing drug and alcohol problems and had secured supported accommodation, which could be lost if he was denied his liberty pending trial.
Sheriff Kevin Veal told the accused: ”It seems that having regard to the previous convictions and similar offences and, importantly, the fact he is still subject to the unexpired portion of the last sentence that this is not an appropriate case for bail.”
