Former Dundee United footballer William (Willie) McDonald, who also spent more than 35 years in junior football in Dundee, has died.
Mr McDonald passed away aged 77 on Friday.
Born in Dundee, he was educated at SS Peter and Paul’s and St John’s before working in the construction industry and then as a docker at Dundee Port.
He joined St Joseph’s during the 1950s and was signed by United as a right winger, playing his part in the team that won promotion to the old First Division in 1960.
He married his wife Elizabeth (Betty) in 1959, with many of the United first-team squad attending the wedding.
Mr McDonald later moved on to play for Stirling Albion, Raith Rovers and Montrose before returning to junior football to play with St Joseph’s.
After his retiral from the game, he carried on as a commitee member, becoming president and being instrumental in the club’s move to Fairfield Park and building their social club.
He left the juniors in the mid-90s and retired from Dundee Port in 1996.
A keen golfer and bowler, he was also still a regular attender at junior games and was a member of Dundee North End social club.
He is survived by Betty, daughter Liz and sons Billy and Scott, along with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
